A thousand drums: Guinness Book of World Records

Simultaneous roaring of a thousand drums today, January 22, will fire the first salvo of vying in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Tambor, Trumpa, Martsa Musika competition makes its way to the hearts of more than a million spectators of the world-famous Dinagyang Festival.

Dr. Febe Cang, chairperson of the Dinagyang drum and bugle competition, said the morning event will saw more than 1,000 drums roaring from the drummers of 16 Dinagyang Ati-atihan tribe contest, entries of 4 drum and lyre corps elementary level, 6 competitors in the secondary level and 3 marching bands and from guest performers PNP Band and the University of San Agustin.

Cang said they are going to document all the activities, the sound, music and performance of the drummers and send these to the Guinness Book of World Records by showing off that Iloilo Dinagyang is the biggest tourism event in the entire world.

The thousand drums will be held before the contest proper starting at 8:00 in the morning today. The contesting groups will perform in two performance areas such as the Freedom Grandstand and the Iloilo provincial capitol area. Read more

Dinagyang Dance Showdown Year 3

dinagyang-dance-showdown-year-3A total of 7 dance groups that passed the elimination rounds of the Dinagyang Dance Showdown Year 3 are set to vie in the grand finals today, January 22 at SM City Iloilo.

Spearheaded by city councilor Nielex Tupas, ABS-CBN and SM City, the dance showdown is a regular special event of the world-famous Dinagyang Festival with highlights this weekend.

Tupas said his dance project seeks to give an opportunity to the youth especially in the barangays to show-off their dancing skills, discipline and commitment to give Iloilo City the honor of being the festival center of Western Visayas. Read more

2010 Dinagyang season starts

ILOILO CITY – Let the drums begin its roar and let the dancers sway to the beat of Dinagyang as the 2010 festival season started, October 16, 2009 at the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand.

The city government and the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation launched the 41th year of Dinagyang Festival as this city’s premier tourist attraction and best practice of concreting partnership between the government and private sector.

City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas led the afternoon launching rites after a motorcade and mass and declared the start of the 2010 Dinagyang season amidst blaring Dinagyang drums and dance exhibitions by Tribu Pan-ay of Fort San Pedro National High School and Tribu Silak of the Iloilo City National High School. Tribu Paghidaet, Tribu Kasag chosen 2009 Dinagyang’s best

Tribu Paghidaet

Tribu Paghidaet of Lapaz National High School and Tribu Kasag of Banate, Iloilo bagged the championships in the Ati and Kasadyahan competitions, respectively, of this year’s Dinagyang Festival.

This is the second year that Tribu Paghidaet topped the Ati Competition, one of the highlights of the Dinagyang Festival that capped the week-long festivities. It bested 16 other competing tribes this year.

Tribu Paghidaet also won the minor awards that include the Best in Costume, Music, Performance and Choreography and special awards for Best in Head Dress and Costume. Its choreographer Ramil Huyatid was also named the Best Choreographer.

Miss Dinayang 2009 - Nathalie Grace Roberts, AB Psych I of Center Philippine University.

The British-Filipina student from Central Philippine University (CPU), Nathalie Grace Roberts was crowned Miss Dinagyang 2009 in a glittery beauty pageant held at the Colegio de San Jose auditorium over the weekend.

The 17-year-old Psychology student from CPU was also named Best in Swimsuit, Best in Interview, Best in Tourism Advocacy and Best in Newspaper Gown.

This is the fourth straight year for CPU’s candidate to the pageant to win.
University of Iloilo’s Stephanie Juanitas was declared first runner-up and Miss Photogenic. She also bagged the Best in Evening Gown and Best in Dinagyang Attire awards.

The Iloilo City Sports Council under the leadership of Councilor Joe III Espinosa has endorsed for the approval of the “3rd Mayor Jerry P. Treñas National Dinagyang Badminton Cup” which will be held on January 23 and 24, 2009 at Sportsville Badminton Court.

The tournament will be handled by the Iloilo-Panay Badminton Club, Inc. (IPBCI) under its new President, Orchid Yap.

The tournament will have the following categories: Men’s and Ladies Doubles (Level B, C, D, E and F); 40 and above Men’s (Doubles); 12 & under Boys and Girls (Singles, Doubles & Mixed Doubles); 16 & under Boys and Girls (Singles, Doubles & Mixed Doubles).

The tournament is part of the developmental program for badminton as instructed by Mayor Jerry P. Treñas to the Iloilo City Sports Council. Councilor Joe III Espinosa said that the age group categories is our commitment to the younger players for they will be our future national and international players that will bring pride and honor to Iloilo City.
