Iloilo media conducts relief drive for ‘Ondoy’ victims

ILOILO CITY – The local media industry in southern city has joined in the massive and continuing relief operations to help victims of typhoon Ondoy in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.
Starting with the ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya and Aksyon Radyo, the media’s relief drives have netted several boxes of used clothing, canned goods, noodles and cash amount delivered to their national offices in Manila late last week.
Charrie Ginete-Ilon of ABS-CBN Iloilo and John Paul Tia of Aksyon Radyo Iloilo are both actively pursuing the relief drive by tapping students and other young people here to help and do their share in the operation that already netted the sympathy and concern of the Ilonggos on the plight of typhoon victims in Luzon.
Other radio station such as Bombo Radyo Iloilo, RMN 744, Super Radyo Iloilo and GMA TV6 are also conducting massive continuing relief drives from benevolent Ilonggos for the benefit of Ondoy victims in Luzon.
On the other hand, a local media cooperative composed of several local media practitioners are also conducting its own relief and fund drive for the benefit of typhoon victims in Metro Manila.
Several non-government organizations and religious sector have also kicked off their own campaign to gather any assistance for Ondoy’s victims.
One of these is the Family Planning Organization of the Philippines (FPOP) Iloilo council which had sent its own assistance to Manila October 6 realized from donations of cash and used clothing from its own council members.
The city and province of Iloilo have suffered from the onslaughts of super Typhoon Frank in June 2008 and the cities of Marikina and Quezon City sent in cash donations to help Iloilo City. Workers from the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) were dispatched by chairman Bayani Fernando and stayed in Jaro, Iloilo City for almost two months last year to help clean the mud debris caused by Typhoon Frank.
