2 Million to see Dinagyang Festival
More than 2 million individuals are expected to see and enjoy the highlights of Dinagyang Festival slated Saturday, January 23 and Sunday, January 24.
City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said the spectators and revelers this year’s celebration is beyond his expectations as all hotels and pension houses here are fully booked and paid in advance.
Treñas also said that beach resorts, lodging houses and hotels in the first and second districts of Iloilo have reported full reservations for guests and revelers of Dinagyang.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo could not come to the Iloilo celebration since she has prior commitments. However, this should not dampen the spirit of Dinagyang as more dignitaries have signified their intentions to come to Dinagyang on Saturday and Sunday. Read more

Iloilo celebrates week for autistic children
This southern city is celebrating the weeklong 14th National autism Consciousness Week with a program highlight on Sunday, January 24 at SM City Iloilo.
This was announced by Dolores Laudenorio, head of the Office of Persons with Disability Affairs (OPDA).
Laudenorio said that autism is a lifelong development disability that affects at least 600,000 families in the Philippines. It is a disability that affects how an individual interprets what he sees, hears and touches, thereby impairing his understanding and use of language and his adaptation to his environment.
The disability is not curable but is treatable. When a child is diagnosed and receives intervention early in life and given the appropriate education and therapy, they can become self-reliant and productive members of society. Read more

The Iloilo Paraw (sailboat) Regatta, instituted in 1973 is a race among native outriggers in the strait between Guimaras Island and Iloilo City. Called “paraw” in the local dialect, these native outriggers faithfully copy in materials and design sailboats which carried to Panay, in 1212 A.D. the first settlers from Borneo who were in search for a peaceful home. the sailboats have survived the centuries and become a vital part of the Ilonggo seafaring life.
The first Iloilo Paraw Regatta was organized by the Iloilo Department of Tourism. The City of Iloilo, the municipalities of Oton, Jordan, Buenavista, Philippine Coast Guard, Negros Navigation, the late Atoniode Oteyza, Iloilo Boat Club, Panay Amateur Radio Club, the Iloilo Jaycees, Anhawan Beach resort and a host of others, readily welcomed the project and lent a helping hand. Since then, the Iloilo Paraw Regatta has grown both in size and renown. The race has become more exciting, colorful and inevitably a challenge to manage. This year, the Iloilo Paraw Regataa is among the main highlights of Island Philippines, a promotional program of the Department of Tourism. Read more

The Iloilo City Sports Council under the leadership of Councilor Joe III Espinosa has endorsed for the approval of the “3rd Mayor Jerry P. Treñas National Dinagyang Badminton Cup” which will be held on January 23 and 24, 2009 at Sportsville Badminton Court.
The tournament will be handled by the Iloilo-Panay Badminton Club, Inc. (IPBCI) under its new President, Orchid Yap.
The tournament will have the following categories: Men’s and Ladies Doubles (Level B, C, D, E and F); 40 and above Men’s (Doubles); 12 & under Boys and Girls (Singles, Doubles & Mixed Doubles); 16 & under Boys and Girls (Singles, Doubles & Mixed Doubles).
The tournament is part of the developmental program for badminton as instructed by Mayor Jerry P. Treñas to the Iloilo City Sports Council. Councilor Joe III Espinosa said that the age group categories is our commitment to the younger players for they will be our future national and international players that will bring pride and honor to Iloilo City.

World’s Biggest La Paz Batchoy
Hundreds feast on largest batchoy bow
Ilonggos on Thursday feasted on the largest-ever bowl of La Paz batchoy in a bid for a world record.
Around 1,000 residents and guests flocked to the La Paz District plaza where a giant stainless steel bowl was set up to cook the savory noodle dish.
The bowl, measuring two meters in width and one meter in height and custom-made in Cebu City for P180,000, had a capacity of 3,500 liters. The broth alone reached 1,700 liters.
Joel Adrias, vice president for operations of the Deco’s Batchoy, the original makers of the dish, said they expected to prepare 1,000 to 1,200 servings.
Three hundred servings were reserved for street and school children while the rest were served to guests and residents in the jam-packed area at the public plaza.
“We are making history,” city tourism officer Ben Jimena told spectators and guests led by Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas and Presidential Assistant for Western Visayas Raul Banias. Read more
